Personal Statement

I am a very hands-on, practical minded individual with a wide range of interchangeable skills in the areas of design, engineering and computing. I have shown a versatile approach to work although I am keen to apply and develop my specialist skills in the areas of design and engineering.

I am Skilful at problem solving, thinking through challenges in a logical and thorough manner. Throughout my studies and practical experience I have gained a good understanding of materials, their properties and how they are used in manufacturing. I am very self motivated and find challenging design problems inspiring.

Proficient in the use of computers and have working knowledge of a wide range of software, including Microsoft Office and more design specialised packages such as Solid works, Adobe Photoshop and AutoCAD. I also have web design experience using Flash, Html and basic JavaScript.

Resourceful, committed and motivated team player, very aware of the importance of a multi-skilled team who work well together. Practiced at working to tight deadlines and have the ability to stay focused while prioritising my tasks.

Work Experience

September 2004 to July 2006 - Prins UK Ltd. Kidderminster, UK.
Industrial Weighing Machine Design and Manufacture
I completed a 12 month industrial placement working along side the technical director developing the industrial weighing machines and issuing technical drawings to in-house and external manufacturers. I also received web design training in order to design, build and maintain their new site.

I became involved with many other aspects of the business including publicity, poster and banner design for exhibitions, researching new systems for stock control and consulting with software engineers in order to produce a new touch screen control system.

I continued working for Prins on a retainer contract through my final year of study.

April 2004 - Memory Pack Ltd. Cambridge, UK.
Specialise in Product Design, Tooling and Rapid Prototyping
I completed a short freelance project for MemoryPack. My main tasks were to develop the form of a new idea they had for a disposable razor, producing a 3D model using a combination of Alias Wavefront and SolidWorks and generating a rapid prototype of the solution. I gained valuable experience of using CAD, working to tight deadlines and of Rapid Prototyping.

September 2003 to May 2004 - Huddersfield Students Union. Huddersfield, UK.
As chairman of the Outdoor Pursuits society my main responsibilities were recruitment and organisation of the group's activities. This was a voluntary position.

August 2003 - Sapa Ltd. Evesham, UK.
Aluminium finishing department.
I had a wide range of tasks, including working in the resin thermal break department and the spray department. I gained valuable experience of the processes involved with aluminium finishing and first hand understanding of some of the problems.

July 2003 - Raven Croft Plastics Ltd. Evesham, UK.
Extruded plastic parts, from window frames to cable tidies.
I learnt a great deal about the extrusion process, how the machines were set up and why some designs are difficult to manufacture.

This has advanced my ability to think creatively and solve problems with knowledge of the appropriate technologies. Interests and Hobbies

As former chairman of the university's Outdoor Pursuits society; I enjoy mountain walking, camping and the great outdoors. I have helped plan and lead walks in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Moors and Ben-Nevis amongst others.

In 2001 I travelled to Switzerland, backpacking and finding places to camp along the way. More recently in December 2004 I journeyed to India where we played a part in a traditional wedding, saw some of the tourist attractions and then took a Jeep up into the Indian Himalayas. I have also completed the 190 mile coast to coast walk across Britain taking in the Pennines, North York Moors and the beautiful Lake District.
